摘要

In the first part of the report the general geography, climate and culture of the District of Nunoa in Peru is presented. The suitability of Nunoa as a site for the study of bio-cultural adaptation to altitude and its associated stresses is evaluated. The Nunoa district is one of the highest areas of the world which has been occupied by man over several hundred generations. Despite some acculturative influence in recent years the majority of the population still lives in a traditional pastoral economy supplemented with some agriculture so as to maintain a stable ecosystem. The method of collecting data on the biological characteristics of the population is briefly presented. A preliminary analysis of the physical growth of the children is included. The analysis demonstrates that the Nunoa population is one of the latest maturing peoples in the world and by comparing the growth pattern and nutrition of this group with a lower elevation Indian group it is shown that their late maturation status may be the direct result of altitude stress. A study of neonatal mortality in relation to altitude in Peru is included as an appendix.
