The work of the Soviet scientists has demonstrated: the three-dimensional structure of the 'protein, in this case a helical structure, is lodged in the protein molecules themselves. The formation of the quaternary structure of the protein in the cell requires the presence of nothing other than the protein itself in the required concentration. When a sufficient amount of it has been collected, this probably is a signal for the formation of a quaternary structure: quantity is converted to quality.nThis work possesses still another aspect. The protein sheath of the phage, like the protein of the tobacco mosaic virus, may be considered as a very fine crystal.
