The source of geomagnetic bays is electric currents flowing in a band about 400 km wide at a height of 100-150 km in the region of 70 degrees north latitude. Some features of the variable magnetic field which these currents produce in the middle latitudes are examined. For this purpose the current layer is replaced by an equivalent linear current, this being in practice permissible at distances exceeding 1500-2000 km from the current layer. To simplify the mathematics, two further assumptions are made. In view of the relatively small portions of the earth's surface involved, the curvature of this surface, and also the (corresponding) curvature of the linear current are neglected.
