In spite of the achievements in industrialization claimed by the Communists during the last few years, food is still the greatest single item of production in China. However, the amount of food production has for centuries been a Chinese puzzle. Prior to the publication of the first comprehensive survey of crop production by C. C. Chang in 1932, only very fragmentary and scattered data were available. In 1937 Professor J. L. Buck's monumental work on Chinese agriculture was published. There are wide discrepancies between these two studies with regard to estimates of food production in 3 China. The few figures made available by the Chinese Communists give still another picture. This Memorandum presents a preliminaryattempt to derive a new set of estimates of the production of certain important food crops. Any such attempt is necessarily made difficult by a paucity of data, a difficulty that can be overcome only by making a number of bold assumptions. The present work, avowedly only a beginning, may stimulate others to study this important problem.
