The use of liquid alkali metals as a heat transfer medium or motive fluid for power conversion systems has increased significantly in recent years. This recent widespread application of liquid alkali metals has created new demands in the area of liquid alkali metal handling technology. Contaminants existing in liquid alkali metal systems may exert deleterious effects on thermophysical properties, corrosivity and handling characteristics. This paper presents an analytical study on the physicochemical and kinetic aspects of liquid cesium purification, employing the hot gettering technique. Moreover, this paper reviews the properties and various aspects of handling sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium. In addition, typical sources of contamination are discussed.
