A series of tests on shaft insets were made at the request of the National Coal Board, and the results are summarised in B.H.R.A. Report RR 630. Following from these tests, the Reconstruction Department of the Board have suggested two designs of by-pass which could be accepted as standard. As these designs are somewhat different in detail (principally in increased length) from those which were used previously, some further tests have been made to determine the relevant flow losses when flow is down the shaft.nThe tests have revealed that the length of the by-pass is of some importance in imposing a limit on the reduction of loss which can be achieved by increasing the by-pass- area. It has been shown that the flow characteristics in the inset model are similar to those of an orifice or nozzle, and it may thus be possible to calculate the effects of small variations in the principal dimensions.
