Auburn University senior project students have competed annually in three of the university engineering design challenges, these included the portable ascent device in 2012, the portable spanning device in 2013 and the heavy lift competition in 2014. Students submitted reports, made presentations to military personnel and demonstrated their device each year as part of the competition. The portable ascent device was a ladder that the soldier attach to the wall and used to incrementally climb the wall, a ladder length at a time, but failed due to a poorly welded bracket at the competition. The portable spanning device was a bridge with handrails that was made from composite tubing that fit in a soldiers backpack, and successfully spanned 16' at the competition. The heavy lift device was an inflatable bag concept that successfully lifted approximately 26,000 lb and won the 2014 competition.
