摘要

The objective of this program is to enhance the research training of undergraduate students in the biological sciences, particularly underrepresented ethnic minorities and women. The participants are from four minority-serving teaching institutions: Jackson State University (JSU), Jackson, MS; St. Mary's University (StMU), San Antonio, TX; Texas A & M International University (TAMIU), Laredo, TX; and Texas A & M University, College Station, TX (TAMU-CS). During this reporting period, 12 highly qualified students (4 from JSU, 4 from StMU, 3 from TAMIU, and 1 from TAMU-CS) participated in the summer research internship program at TAMU-CS. This group included 6 juniors and 6 seniors; and of these, 6 were biology majors, 4 were chemistry majors, 1 was a genetics major, and 1 was a pharmacy major. Interns were matched with suitable mentors based on their indicated research interests, and they participated in research projects supervised by faculty in the departments of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Biology, Veterinary Integrative Bioscience, Animal and Food Services, Nutrition and Food Science, Poultry Science, and Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology. The program ran from May 30 through August 2, 2004, and it culminated with a 2-day symposium held on August 3-4 in conjunction with the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program, in which the interns made oral and poster presentations of their research. During the 2005-2006 academic year, 3 interns presented their research at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) held in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 2-5. The report includes a description of expanded accomplishments, a bibliography of conference papers presented by interns, and a description of awards received by interns.
