摘要

Since the World War II era, when scientists, mathematicians, and engineers began using revolutionary electronic machinery that could rapidly perform complex calculations in support of the war effort, pioneering computing capabilities have been a principal foundation of the nation's technological and economic strength. Today, solving many of our most important scientific and engineering problems requires high-end computers. They are used, for example, for modeling weather and climate patterns; designing highly complex physical systems such as aircraft, ships, and automobiles; and conducting advanced image and signal processing and cryptanalysis. Moreover, U.S. capability in science and engineering is increasingly being called on to address urgent challenges in national and homeland security, economic competitiveness, health care, and environmental protection.
