In an attempt to meet the U.S, Air Forces's demand for a new generation of lighter weight, higher performance polymeric materials, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the U.S. Research Laboratory Propulsion Directorate have, for the past six years, pursued the development of new chemical feedstock technologies based on Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS).
