Our goal was to design and validate an inventory to assess multiple dimensions of PTSD-related functional impairment experienced by active duty service members and veterans. A series of focus groups and individual assessments using interviews and selfreport questionnaires were used to understand the multiple domains of functional impairment. Utilizing this information, the 80-item Inventory of Psychosocial Functioning (IPF) was developed, as well as a brief 7-item version. The psychometric properties of these inventories were tested in Phases II and III. By creating and validating an inventory to assess PTSD-related functional impairment we hope to offer a useful tool for clinicians, researchers and military leaders. This measure will have enormous value in identifying individuals with significant levels of impairments across multiple domains and for promoting more efficient allocation of resources.
