A study was undertaken to determine whether an ultraviolet curable material can be used to remove film insulation from small-gauge magnet wire. The intent was to find a material capable of fracturing wire insulation film in one of two ways. The first involved treating the insulation with certain materials and ultraviolet radiation to shrink, or dramatically expand, the insulation. The second involved penetrating the insulation with materials that would cause it to expand upon ultraviolet exposure. Materials used were to be nonhazardous to personnel and operate at room temperature. It was determined that the original premise of a nonhazardous material and room temperature operation would not produce the desired insulation removal of all the chemical combinations tested. A small degree of success was found with more complex materials and elevated temperatures.
