Trace element contents of carbonates contain important information regarding the sample's diagenetic history. However, due to the fine scale and intergrown nature of many carbonate textures, separation of the different phases of bulk analysis is difficult or impossible. Analytical techniques have been developed using the ion microprobe that allow the analysis of a variety of trace elements in spots of 10 to 20 microns in diameter, at detection limits of 1 ppm or lower. The utility of this technique is demonstrated in a study of diagenetic carbonates from the Nisku Formation in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin.
