This report summarizes a study which examined the effects of burning or yarding wood residues on soil surface disturbance, bulk density and selected chemical properties in the forest floor and top 15 centimeters of mineral soil. Neither burning nor yarding treatment caused significant changes in mineral soil chemical content. Chemical content and weight of the forest floor increased in the yarded units and decreased in the burned unit. Bulk density of surface soil was unaffected by treatment. Burning exposed much more mineral soil than did yarding. Season of yarding did not appear to influence soil surface disturbance, bulk density or mineral soil and forest floor properties. 26 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab. (ERA citation 13:056444)
