Multidemensional and time dependent computer simulations revealed crucial, and in some cases, previously unsuspected phenomena that govern MHD system performance. These include a class of phenomena known as magnetoaerothermal effects which occur in high performance MHD generators with strong interaction between the magnetic forces and the flowfield. The predicted existence and importance of these phenomena were dramatically confirmed by the MHD High Performance Demonstration Experiment at the Arnold Engineering Development Center in 1982. Pre- and post-test simulations of this experiment and subsequent experiments at Avco Everett Research Laboratory and Stanford University validated the models which predicted these effects. To investigate the magnitude of these and other phenomena on the performance of prototype- and full-scale MHD generators, and to find ways of mitigating their harmful effects, the validated models were applied to generator designs for the Engineering Test Facility and Advanced Power Train projects and to the Proof-of-Concept testing at the Component Development and Integration Facility in Butte, Montana. A simple criterion for assessing the possible importance of magnetoaerothermal effects was devised and applied successfully to a variety of generator designs.
