Model Training Project for Family Caregivers of Rural Minority Elderly: Dissemination and Utilzation

Results are presented of a training project designed to develop a model for providing educational support for family caregivers of rural minority elderly. The specific objectives of the project included: (1) prepare and present programs on aging for 10 churches and/or community groups; (2) adapt materials from 'As Parents Grow Older' Project for use with rural minority families; (3) implement model training project cooperatively with agencies on aging in 5 different locations with 12 family members in each; (4) encourage at least 75 percent minority family member participation in the model training program; (5) evaluate the effectiveness of the model training project; and (6) complete a final training package based on a summative evaluation of the model training program in preparation for dissemination. Using a mutual support group context, didactic and therapeutic approaches were combined to provide information as well as mutual support and problem solving. A total of 160 rural family caregivers, 86 percent of whom were black, participated in 10 training sessions. Ethnic and cultural considerations were integrated into the content and process of the group sessions. Extensive evaluation confirmed the effectiveness and the relevance of the program for providing care to aging relatives.
