An analysis of general properties of travelling waves that can exist in one-dimensional damped systems is presented. It is shown that depending on the symmetry of the potential and the presence or absence of dissipation different classes of localized solutions in the form of kinks, pulses and semisolitons are possible. 11 refs, 5 figs.
