The main features of glacier surges were well known by the time the first detailed glacier dynamics and ice flow law came into being during the 1950s. The surging potential of polar ice streams raises additional questions which remain to be answered by a combination of observations and model refinements. This report reviews the available evidence on glacier sliding, and the main concepts and hypotheses that have been advanced for the surging phenomenon. (ERA citation 12:008656)
