Interest in radiation emitted when swift atomic projectiles strike solids stems from the need for diagnostic information, e.g., in the Tokamak research program and in particle beam research. Here we survey some physical mechanisms that may give rise to appreciable photon emission when such projectiles impinge on solid targets. In many practical diagnostic configurations, the condition of an irradiated solid surface may be uncertain due to residual gas deposition, radiation damage, oxidation, intrinsic and unknown roughness, etc. Here we focus on the photon yield from an ideal aluminum surface, in order to gain understanding of the relative importance of different mechanisms in a simple case. 16 refs., 2 figs.
