Alkali-Free Phosphate Glasses for High Temperature, High Electrical Resistivity Applications

Alkali-free phosphate glasses have been developed in the BaO-B sub 2 O sub 3 -P sub 2 O sub 5 and BaO-Al sub 2 O sub 3 -P sub 2 O sub 5 systems. These glasses have glass transition temperatures greater than or equal to 500 exp 0 C and coefficients of thermal expansion between 95 x 10 exp -70 C exp -1 and 118 x 10 exp -70 C exp -1 . Electrical resistivities of approx. 10 exp 11 OMEGA-cm at 223 exp 0 C compare favorably with the resistivity of fused SiO sub 2 of approx. 10 exp 12 OMEGA-cm at 223 exp 0 C. Hermetic seals with high strength, corrosion-resistant nickel superalloys have been made. This combination of properties make these glasses candidate materials for high temperature applications where high electrical resistivity is required. (ERA citation 09:026454)
