Primary Caregivers-Support Systems: A Synthesis of Issues and Findings

The synthesis describes the two major support systems for primary caregivers--the informal caregiving network and the formal service agencies or organizations--and provides a profile of social and demographic characteristics involved in caregiving. Major findings, conclusions, and issues that have emerged from federally supported demonstration projects are explored. The projects are organized by programmatic thrust: (1) direct strengthening of informal caregiving; (2) the link between formal and informal caregiving; (3) mutual help groups. Suggestions for strengthening supports to primary caregivers, enhancing linages between informal caregiving networks and formal service systems, and developing and sustaining mutual help groups are provided. Other issues that should be resolved in research and demonstration projects are identified, including cost-effective alternatives to institutionalization and medical/financial support.
