摘要

Plutonium in its various valence states in HNO sub 3 solutions was irradiated with ultraviolet-visible light and visible light. Oxidation was the only reaction; plutonium(III) was oxidized to plutonium(IV) and plutonium(IV) was oxidized to plutonium (VI). The oxidation of plutonium(IV) was dependent on the acid concentration and the spectral portion of the light source used. There was no reduction of plutonium(VI) in solutions with HNO sub 3 concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 7N. Plutonium polymer solutions also were irradiated with ultraviolet-visible light, which greatly accelerated the decomposition of both freshly formed and aged polymer. (ERA citation 07:057723)
