This report identifies the relative amount of formal home care services required by the total elderly population in need of service and the amount of informal support which can reasonably be expected to be contributed by family and friends. It describes the methodology for obtaining estimates of the total number of elderly requiring services at various levels of delivery intensity and the approximate costs of service delivery. Also examined is the degree to which families and others provide informal long-term care to disabled elderly and how current trends may affect the ability and willingness of family members to provide services in the future. The report also looks at the current capacity of the formal network of home care providers in Connecticut and estimates how much expansion would be needed to serve all those requiring home care services. Public policy initiatives designed to enhance family support and to provide necessary funding for expanded formal home care services are discussed.
