During this reporting period, we performed several tasks. The first two, as noted in the Project Order, were to conduct a literature survey and then an evaluation of available continuous processing techniques for propellants and/or castable plastic-bonded explosives (PBX). We found that three continuous processing techniques were developed for the propel1ant industry in the late 1950s and early 1960s. One was actually used in production;a small-scale production facility was built for the second technique but never turned on;and the third scheme was farther behind in its development. The need for large-volume propellant manufacture declined sharply in the mid-60s and all schemes were abandoned. Each had advantages and serious drawbacks. We also searched the current literature for new technology, in filled polymers, propellants, and explosives fields. Some of the new equipment has attractive features and may be useful. To round out our information, we contacted and, in some cases, visited organizations currently active in the field.
