Design and safety analysis of permanent structures such as reactor vessel and shield tank of the loop type fast breeder reactor SNR-300 require post-irradiation creep data on the structural steel DIN 1.4948, which is equivalent to type AISI 304. Specimens from plate and weldments were irradiated at 823 K to thermal neutron fluences of about 5 x 10 exp 22 n.m exp -2 and 2 x 10 exp 24 n.m exp -2 , (fast neutron fluences of 10 exp 23 n.m exp -2 and 5 x 10 exp 24 (E> 0.1 MeV) respectively), followed by creep testing up to 10,000 h. The most important effect of irradiation is the diminished ductility of both plate and welded joints. As a result the creep strength of plate is reduced by 50 MPa which means a reduction in creep life by a factor of about 10. Welded joints fracture in unirradiated condition along the dendrite boundaries in the weld at a creep stress 20 MPa lower than parent metal. After irradiation the grain boundaries in the parent metal adjacent to the weld are weaker, causing a further reduction of creep strength of 30 MPa. The irradiation embrittlement is attributed to the formation of helium by thermal neutron reaction with the exp 10 B isotope. The boron is mainly precipitated on the grain boundaries. In applying post irradiation creep-rupture data of type 304 ss for design and analysis of reactor components, thermal fluence limits rather than fast fluence limits should be set for life reduction factors and creep strains.
