Evaluation of a Novel Venturi Collection Device.

Laboratory-scale tests were conducted to compare a novel mu m venturi scrubber design with a conventional design. Operation of the small units (exp 1 /sub 4 -inch throat diameter) at throat gas velocities of 100to 400ft/sec and liquid rates of 5to 15gal/1000ft exp 3of gas yielded collection efficiencies of from 4to 87percent for latex hydrosols of 0.5and 0.8mu m diameter. Collection efficiency of the conventional device exceeded that of the novel device for a given pressure drop between 10to 80inches W.G. and particle diameter of 0.5mu m. Collection of the 0.8mu m dia particles by the novel device exceeded that of the conventional for a given pressure drop of up to 40in. W.G. Centrifugal forces in the novel device were used to separate 96percent of the water injected. Calcine dust generated by fluidizing alumina calcine product in a pilot 10-cm dia fluidized bed was found to have a mass mean diameter of 2mu m with a standard deviation of 2.5. Collection of the calcine dust by the small-scale novel device indicates mass removal efficiencies of around 98percent at the pressure drop encountered in the full-scale calciner off-gas system. Based on the results of the laboratory-scale tests,pilot-scale evaluation of the novel device is recommended. (ERA citation 03:024941)
