摘要

Emergency department utilization in Suffolk County, N.Y., was studied. Data from 13 general medical and surgical hospitals were obtained in 1975, and telephone interviews with patients who had visited emergency departments during the summer of 1976 were conducted. Hospital record abstract study findings indicated that the greatest percentage of visits for injury was in the 6-17 year age group. The greatest percentage of visits for illness was in the 25-44 year age group. Over half of all true emergency visits involved patients over the age of 45 years. Injuries accounted for 61 percent of the visits and illness for 39 percent. More males visited emergency departments than females. Saturdays and Sundays accounted for 33 percent of all visits. Only one-third of true emergency visits occurred during regular office hours for most types of business. Fifty percent of patients with true emergencies came by ambulance. In general, however, patients arrived via private transportation. The findings of 1,354 interviews indicated that 80 percent of respondents had a family physician and were much more likely to be familiar with emergency departments than those with no family physician. Reasons for selecting emergency departments for care varied. About 75 percent did not attempt to contact a physician before visiting emergency departments. Supporting data on the findings of the study are appended.
