Cadmium concentrations were determined in rock scallops (Hinnites multirugosus) and mussels (Mytilus californianus) collected in 1973in the Channel Islands in the Southern California Bight. Concentrations in the total soft tissue were 16times as high in the rock scallop as in the mussel. When organs of the rock scallop were analyzed in more detail,the highest average concentration was 211mu m/g,in digestive gland plus stomach;the lowest was 0.51mu g/g,in adductor muscle. Tracer experiments with exp 109Cd confirmed that the tissues of the rock scallop concentrated cadmium to a greater degree than the corresponding tissues of the mussel. (ERA citation 01:017425)
