Recently, Davidon (Math. Prog., 9, 1-30) has published some new and very promising algorithms for minimizing unconstrained functionals. A particular perspective on these algorithms is presented, and extensions of some of the theory underlying them are developed in this paper. (ERA citation 02:057807)
