Currently, as of January 1, 1975, no reprocessing plants are operating, and unused space in Away From Reactor storage facilities is sufficient for only 50 metric tons of uranium. The total inventory of spent fuel in reactor basins is 927 MTU. Ten reactors do not have space available for a full core discharge. The numbers of reactors projected to be without space for a full core discharge (without Full Core Reserve, FCR) are shown for each case in chart 10. Maintaining an FCR is desirable to avoid an extended reactor shutdown in the event that a full core discharge was to be required. The number of reactors projected to require additional spent fuel storage capacity to permit scheduled discharges is shown for each case in chart 11. Note particularly that timely operation of the reprocessing plants is the key to avoid reactor shutdowns resulting from filled basin. The data shown in charts 10 and 11 do not take into consideration possible modifications to current and planned reactor basins to increase on-site LWR spent fuel storage capabilities. It is understood that reactor basin storage configurations could be modified to permit increased storage without a major construction effort and that some utilities are actively reviewing this option. Therefore, the impact of a nominal 50% reactor basin expansion on the data presented in chart 11 was considered and is shown in chart 12. By comparing charts 11 and 12, it can be seen that increasing reactor basin capacities by 50% permits the basins to receive scheduled discharges for an additional two years.
