Detailed study of the kinetics of the SAFA test has led to development of a shortened protocol. An antigen from Trichinella spiralis larvae has been prepared which is effective in the SAFA test. Four pigs were infected with moderate doses of T. spiralis, and it was shown that the SAFA test could detect antibody as early as 7 days after infection and as late as 22 weeks after infection. Limited experience with the SAFA test for antibodies to hog cholera suggests that the test will be effective in this system when adequate antigens are available.
