Unsteady flow in rivers and reservoirs is computed by numerical simulation of the equations of unsteady flow in open channels consisting of the equations for the conservation of mass and momentum. The simulation is based on an implicit finite difference representation of the primary partial differential equations using a centered difference scheme for distance and a forward difference scheme in time. The finite difference equations are nonlinear and are solved by Newton iteration method. Applications are given to slowly varied and rapidly varied flows in natural channels and reservoirs. The size of the time step was determined by the nature of the problem ranging from 3-minutes for rapidly varied discharge to several hours for flood flows of long duration. There is excellent agreement between observed and computed values. (Author)
