The reaction of phenol and formaldehyde at various molar ratios is studied, and the resulting resins are characterised in terms of physical properties, curing behaviour, and the nature of the char produced on carbonisation. Experimental observations of carbon yield are found to agree well with theoretical data, and the carbons were found to be non-graphitising after high-temperature heat treatment.
