The principle of operation of the two- and three-cavity separator (Schnell-type separator) is described, and the momenta regions where one- and two-particle rejection is possible are computed. In the two-cavity separator, two-particle rejection is possible only in some very small momenta regions, whereas in the three-cavity separator it is pos¬sible over a large continuous momentum range.nIn order that contamination of the separated beam by unwanted hadrons at the bubble chamber be decreased to below a few per cent, the beam stopper thickness has to be made about 2.5 times the size of the undeflected beam. The final deflection of wanted particles maximizing the wanted particle flux at the bubble chamber turns out to be four times the (vertical) angular opening of the undeflected beam in the centre of the deflectors.
