摘要

Relative biological effectiveness (RBE) is observed to depend upon the physical characteristics of radiation and on the biological effect or end point being studied. The quantity most often used to describe the quality of radiation is its linear energy transfer (LET), or, in the case of uncharged radiation, the LET of charged secondary particles. We have aimed at applying quantum mechanical collision theory to see which physical quanti¬ties are relevant in the sense that RBE depends on them, biological factors being kept fixed. By means of successive Born approximations it is shown that (1) the velocity and charge of a heavy charged particle are ultimately the only physical quantities that are needed to describe RBE in terms of the properties of the incident radiation, and (2) these two quantities enter the description of RBE in a combination other than that of the LET function. An experimental test of the practical significance of these results is suggested.
