Critical assembly measurements to establish the neutronics features of a 5000 MW Rover reactor are reported. Initial experiments with the Honeycomb critical assembly served to confirm gross features of the design concept. Subsequent measurements with a more realistic mockup (Phoebus 2 Zepo assembly) have established details of reflector and control rod design, effects of structural materials, and fuel loadings required to give adequate excess reactivity with the required flat power distribution.nHoneycomb mockups simulated the uranium-loaded graphite fuel in the proposed 55-in.-diameter core by means of appropriate numbers of 0.002-in. U(93) foils interleaved with 0.28-in.-thick graphite plates.
