Wafers having densities greater than 99 percent theoretical were produced from B4C and SiC powder mixtures ranging from 0 to 80 v/o SiC. The effects of starting powder purity and size, blending and hot pressing variables, volume fraction of SiC upon density, and microstructure are presented. The effect of density, B4C particle size, and B4C volume fraction upon the corrosion behav¬ior in 680°F water is given. Factors affecting the preparation of hot-pressed B4C containing boron-enriched or depleted in the iso¬tope B10 are also discussed.nThe fabrication of these wafers into Zircaloy-clad elements by eutectic diffusion bonding and gas-pressure bonding, as well as the characteristics of these plate-type elements are described.
