As more and more proteins are subjected to intensive examination, it is becoming apparent that many are com¬posed of subunits of single polypeptide chains or groups of such chains. The frequency with which proteins contain¬ing two or more identical polypeptide chains are en-countered is particularly striking. Furthermore, genetic analysis of the genes which govern protein structure has indicated that many proteins not yet studied chemically are also composed of either identical or different subunits.nThe prevalence of such structure suggests that there may be some general biological significance in the phenomenon. This may lie in the greater potential for variability which is made possible at both gene and pro¬tein levels. The mechanism of subunit association and interaction is gradually being explored, and there is al¬ready evidence that subunit structure is involved in the control of enzyme activity.nThe conference was convened in the hope of enhancing understanding of the mechanism and significance of the subunit structure of proteins by bringing together inves¬tigators interested in both the genetic and biochemical aspects of the phenomenon.
