ADVANCED COURSE ON NUCLEAR PHYSICS WITH THERMAL NEUTRONS organized by the Nether lands'-Norwegian Reactor School at Institutt for Atomenergi, Kjeller, Norway 16th September - 27th September 1963
In this section the transmission of polarized neutrons through targets containing polarized nuclei will be discussed. The aim of this type of experiment is mainly to determine spins of low-energy neutron resonances. Depolarization phenomena and the energy spread of the beam play an important role and are therefore taken into account in the mathematical treatment. These notes are mainly based on work performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Other methods for assigning resonance spins are briefly mentioned. The experiments can also be used to obtain information on internal magnetic fields acting on the nuclei.
