THE EFFECT OF CHARGE SEPARATION ON NONLINEAR WAVES IN A COLLISION-FREE PLASMA

Nonlinear plane wave motions of low-density fully ionized plasma propagating perpendicular to an applied magnetic field have been investigated by several authors. The solutions found consisted of plane periodic waves and solitary symmetric pulses with a characteristic length much smaller than the mean free path.nIn the first papers to appear in the literature, two restrictive assumptions were employed. The first was the neglect of the thermal or random energies of the particles. The second was the neglect of the numerical difference between the charge densities of ions and electrons, but not the longitudinal electric field produced by this charge separation. The latter is called quasi charge neutrality. Solutions were obtained only if the phase velocity did not exceed a certain critical velocity. In terms of the Alfven Mach number, the critical velocity corresponded to Mach two.
