The development and preliminary evaluation of beryllia base cements are described for the joining of multiple beryllia segments.nThe development and preliminary evaluation of beryllia base cements are described for the joining of multiple beryllia segments.nA UOX BeO body composition, amenable to air firing to high densities, was developed by additions of A1203. Also investigated were the BeO-MgO, BeO-Zr02, BeO-Si02 systems and binary additions of MgO-SiO2, MgO-Al203, MgO-Zr02, Al203-Si02, Al203-Zr02, and Zr02-Si02. Singular additions of Si02 and Si02 in combination with A1203 or Zr02 did not improve the sinter-ability of UOX BeO in air atmospheres. Binary combinations of 1% A1203 + 2% MgO, 2% A1203 + 1% ZrO2, or 1% MgO + 2% Zr02 beneficiated the sinterability of UOX BeO in air atmospheres comparable to the density ranges achieved by the singular additions of A1203.
