The objectives of the instrumentation development project were clearly defined. The pressure transducers had to have fast response times, in the microsecond range, be able to withstand many hydro gen-oxygen explosions without damage, resist corrosion by the core solution containing uranyl sulphate and sulphuric acid, operate satisfactorily in intense nuclear radiation fields of 10 15 n/cm 2 -sec, and withstand temperatures up to 150°C. It was also required that the transducers be small in size in order to fit existing mounting apertures, and be capable of static readings and calibrations in order to allow periodic checks of the sensitivity after installation. The recording devices were also required to have fast response, in the microsecond range or better. For tem¬perature sensors, time constants smaller than a millisecond were needed. Durability and resistance to corrosion and radiation for these devices were also necessary properties, in the same degree as for the pressure transducers.
