The properties of a system consisting of colloidal alkalimetalparticles in thermal equilibrium with a crystalline alkali halide are considered in de tail, with particular reference to the systernK-KCK It is shown that in the system K-KC1, the particles most probably are about 20 A in size and consist of liquid metal compressed about 15 per cent by surface tension. A theoretical calculation of W is reviewed, and it is concluded that the existing inaccuracy is due to an unsatisfactory value for x the electron affinity of KC1. A recent report that the additive coloring process is not reversible is discussed, and it is shown that further experiments are essential before the mechanism and the re versibility of the additive coloring process can be considered established. It is concluded that the heats of reaction which are observed are in substantial agreement with a theoretical prediction based on the assumption that one reactant is colloidal metal embedded in the alkali halide crystal but that current interpretations of the resulting optical absorption phenomena require revision to incorporate a more realistic view of the physical state of the metal in these particles.nThis report is based upon studies conducted for the Atomic Energy Commission under Contract AT- 11- l-GEN-8.3.
