The Fourth International Conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology211u001e(ISMB-96) was held at Washington University in St, Louis from June 12-15,1996. 211u001eThe call for papers produced 65 submissions that were of high standard that 211u001ereflected the international character of the coherence, with submissions received 211u001efrom North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. All papers were rigorously 211u001ereviewed by at least three members of the program committee, and the program for 211u001ethe conference was assembled based on their recommendations. Only those papers 211u001ethat could be presented as fill talks at the conference were accepted for 211u001epublication as Ml papers in the proceedings. Thus, only 27 top-quality papers 211u001ewere included in these proceedings. AN attendees at the conference were 211u001eencouraged to present at the open poster sessions. The poster abstracts were made 211u001eavailable as World Web documents, and were published in a separate booklet.
