In the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne, the demand for211u001eresources on the Onyx 2 exceeds the resources available for consumption. To 211u001edistribute these scarce resources effectively, we need a scheduling and resource 211u001emanagement package with multiple capabilities. In particular, it must accept 211u001estandard interactive user logins, allow batch jobs, backfill the system based on 211u001eavailable resources, and permit system activities such as accounting to proceed 211u001ewithout interruption. The package must include a mechanism to treat the graphic 211u001epipes as a schedulable resource. Also required is the ability to create advance 211u001ereservations, offer dedicated system modes for large resource runs and 211u001ebenchmarking, and track the resources consumed for each job run. Furthermore, our 211u001eusers want to be able to obtain repeatable timing results on job runs. And, of 211u001ecourse, package costs must be carefully considered. We explored several options, 211u001eincluding NQE and various third-party products, before settling on the PBS 211u001escheduler.
