During the summer of 1999 the installation of three new Electron Cyclotron211u001eHeating (ECH) transmission lines began as part of the 110 GHz ECH Upgrade to 6 MW 211u001eproject for DIII-D. An important step in the development of the transmission line 211u001edesign was the selection of the waveguide size. To make this selection, analyses 211u001ewere conducted to characterize the thermal and radio frequency (rf) loss 211u001eperformance of the key corrugated waveguide components under 1 MW, long pulse (10 211u001es, 1% duty cycle) operation. Other factors that were analyzed included vacuum 211u001econductance and pumping speed, ease of installation, space considerations, and 211u001eoverall cost. The two candidate transmission line sizes were 2.50 in. and 1.25 211u001ein. id. An overview of the design and layout of the proposed transmission lines 211u001efor the DIII-D ECH upgrade project is presented. Details and results are given 211u001efor the vacuum conductance analysis of the overall transmission line, the rf loss 211u001eanalyses and tests on corrugated waveguide and miter bends, and the thermal 211u001eanalyses of the mirrors in the corrugated waveguide switch and the power monitor 211u001emiter bend. Finally, a discussion is presented which weighs the results of these 211u001eanalyses with the experience gained through the installation and operation of the 211u001eexisting three 1 MW ECH systems at DIII-D and concludes with the selection of 211u001e1.25 in. i.d. waveguide and components for the upgrade project.
