Treatability studies for polyethylene and sulfur polymer microencapsulation of211u001eFernald Silo 1 and Silo 3 wastes were conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory 211u001e(BNL). The treatability work, which included optimal formulation development and 211u001eprocessibility testing, was performed to determine the applicability of these 211u001esolidification technologies for the Fernald Silo mixed wastes. A surrogate was 211u001eused during formulation development for the Silo 1 waste. Processing results in 211u001econjunction with leach testing of waste forms to measure waste form performance 211u001ewere used to establish the most effective thermoplastic/waste composition. A 211u001eseries of waste form specimens were cast from the surrogate and mixed waste 211u001eencapsulated product with both polyethylene and sulfur polymer for more 211u001ecomprehensive testing at the University of Cincinnati. This data will be compared 211u001ewith treatability results from alternative solidification and stabilization 211u001emethods such as cementation and phosphate-bonded ceramics, to evaluate treatment 211u001eoptions for Fernald Silo wastes. Based on the treatability results, polyethylene 211u001eand sulfur polymer microencapsulation can successfully process Silo wastes. 211u001eConsidering waste form leach performance using the Universal Treatment Standard 211u001elimits, based on testing conducted at BNL, polyethylene and sulfur polymer are 211u001eboth viable treatment methods for Silo 3 waste. For Silo 1 waste, polyethylene 211u001emicroencapsulation is recommended due to the high lead concentration in the 211u001ewaste.
