This report describes the requirements for a general model of an HVDC link to be implemented in a power system dynamics program. Furthermore the report describes a general model and how the model is implemented in the PSS/E program from Power Technologies, Inc.. Verification of the model through comparisons between simulations using the model and simulations in a real-time analog simulator and another power system dynamics program is also described. Finally the usage of the model to simulate various dynamic phenomena in a power system is discussed. The model developed is considered general though it is based on a vendor specific (ABB) design. The model includes the converters, converter transformers, DC line and the HVDC control system. In addition to the general model, specific control functions pertinent for the Kontek HVDC Interconnection are included, i.e. power modulation, frequency modulation and emergency power control. The model also includes an inverter voltage controller for long DC cables. To make the model more usable to non HVDC experts several dynamic and/or transient control functions which becomes active during dynamics are included in the model. The implemented model features a system independent integration time step whereby all the important details of a DC control system can be included without severe consequences for the overall simulation time. The obtained accuracy of the model when used on typical power system dynamics are well within the specified requirements. (au)
