The present paper is aimed at contributing to the assessment of Transient Recoverey Voltages (TRVs9) in MV distribution systems considering the ongoing work in the joint CIGRE-CIRED WG CC03. Results of simulations of different type of faults in a system representative of the Italian public distribution networks are presented: in addition to faults at the terminals of the circuit breakers and fed from the system (System Fed Faults) the case of fault located at transformer terminals (Transformer Fed Fault) is considered. Short Line Faults (SLFs) are examined in detail too. For each type of fault, the influence of the system load and of cable connenctions is evaluated; for SLFs, the influence of the load representation on TRV values is also discussed. TRVs occuring at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd poles to clear are presented and the comparison of the values resulting from the simulations with those specified by Standards is made. Finally, results of experimental tests carried out on three different MV circuit breakers (two SF6 and one vacuum) rated 24 kV-12.5 kA, currently used in the ENEL's MV distribution network, when subjected to breaking tests with TRVs having RRRV (rate of rise of recovery voltage) exceeding the standard values are reported and commented.
