Analysis of payload operation tasks resulted in an autonomous experiment concept. Features of the recommended concept include: experiment specific tasks are to be performed by microcomputers (Dedicated Experiment Processors - DEPs) and not by Command and Data Management Subsystem (CDMS); and development and complete checkout of autonomous experiments (hardware and software) is the principal investigator's responsibility. Based on this concept a payload operations scenario and requirements concerning crew activities, CDMS, and DEPs are defined. Modifications, necessary for the adaptation of CDMS to the concept, are described and include development of the DEP-Experiment Bus Adaptor, implementation of the ssubsystem computer/experiemnt computer link, and experiment computer system modifications. It is recommended that support be provided to the principal investigator to reduce experiment development and checkout costs by a DEP instrumentation pool and a CDMS simulation package for experiment checkout.
